If Yoga is the dissolving of all self limiting thoughts patterns & tendencies, then self awareness and getting free is the key! Yoga Hanalei offers a non dogmatic, practical and fresh approach to Hatha Yoga which appreciates yoga as an evolving science and the art of living well being. Exploring a fusion of Hatha, Ashtanga, Iyengar, and Vinyasa / Flow Yoga, the training cultivates a well rounded and holistic approach, where the aim is to teach the student, not just a style.

We believe that Yoga is the art of transformation and finding peace in mind, body & spirit, and that in this day and age, Yoga is now needed more than ever!

Who should take this training:
Any sincere student of Yoga desiring an in depth study, whether they want to teach in the future or develop and deepen a personal practice.

Patanjali Yoga Sutra of the Month

I:15 Dṛṣtānusravika vishaya vitṛṣṇasya vashīkāra samjñā vairāgyam
Supreme detachment and self mastery is letting go of the desire for anything seen or heard about, including the promise of heaven or liberation.
The goal of Yoga is to let go, while the internal experience of Yoga is one of release. Supreme mastery, vashīkāra, is described as our ability to let go of any promises we may have heard about, and to open ourselves to the pure joy of experience. Also called Vidyā Yoga, the practices of Patañjali Yoga are both the means and the ends through which we penetrate and peel back the layers of our involuntary patterns and defense mechanisms to rediscover and inhabit our original blueprint of open, loving innocence. Vidyā literally translated means ‘to really see, to really pierce through’, and is derived from the same root as the word Veda, meaning ‘penetrating teachings and knowledge’. The teachings of Yoga forever reveal our patterns, simultaneously offering us the means to extricate ourselves from conditioned existence. Once we open our eyes to these conditioned patterns, we develop the new perspective of nirodha, in which we can hold at least two perspectives simultaneously. With a broadened awareness of both objectivity and the internal responsiveness afforded by subjectivity, we can effectively reevaluate our patterns, refine them or completely let them go, and be pierced to the very core of our being, truly rendering our hearts open.

Congratulations to the graduates of the Level I teacher Training! It has been a wonderful three weeks, and I am so pleased that most of you will continue on in Level II. The TT is my favorite program, as we finally get to delve into the intricacies of Yoga in a committed, concentrated and profound way. It is amazing to see the transformation of the students in such a short time, and truly reinforces the concept of Yoga as a process of compressed evolution. Not only do we get to deepen our relationships with Self, but also many long lasting friendships are forged in the fire of such an experience!
Level I training graduates
As the practices of Yoga peel us back, we get to share and reveal ourselves with one another in a very safe atmosphere that is especially compassionate, supportive and honest. The energy in the room that we share and create together is wonderfully potent, and the bhava, or mood, is like a warm and safe ocean that holds us. Thank you to all of the participants, for all of the wonderful laughter, moments of vulnerability, support, deep conversation and willingness. It makes my life so rich, and continually inspires me not only in teaching, but in my own life and practice as well! My general classes will be back in session during the interim between level I and II. Level II begins on May 14th. Please visit the bottom of this newsletter for schedule information.

Suryanamaskara Workshop with Aruna Peters
Saturday May 26th, 5-7 pm cost: $20

Aruna Peters
Aruna Peters
Aruna moved to Kaua'i from Costa Rica to study Yoga with me over a decade ago, and has been committed to continuing to grow through her study of Yoga in its complete science. Aruna is offering a retreat in Haena and bringing students from her home in Santa Cruz, and will be offering a class with Bij Mantra and Suryanamaskara.

Workshop Description
In Indian mythology, the Sun is worshipped as a symbol of health and immortal life as a symbol of rising consciousness. The Rig Veda declares that Surya is the soul, both of moving and unmoving beings. The Sun Salutation originated as a series of prostrations to the Sun, and was traditionally performed at dawn, facing the rising Sun. In time, each of the twelve positions came to have its own mantra, celebrating aspects of the Sun’s divinity.
Level I teacher training
This Tantric based Sun Salutation practice is a graceful sequence of 12 postures performed as one continuous exercise making it a form of a moving meditation guided by the breath. Each posture is combined with the chanting of mantra eventually moving towards awareness on the associated energy centers of the body known as the chakra. Our practice will begin with a series of 4 purificatory pranayama (breath control) practices balancing the natural flow of subtle energy in the body as preparation. We will conclude our practice with a period of meditation. We will also explore subtle body theory as it relates to the physical body based on Tantra Yoga.
Having immersed herself in the study of Yoga, Aruna utilizes the various limbs to navigate through life in a balanced manner. Aruna began her training in the Ashtanga Vinyasa style of Yoga with Bhavani Maki who was her initial inspiration into the exploration of Yoga philosophy in addition to the asana practice. This inspired her to seek the guidance of Baba Hari Dass and continue her training at the Mount Madonna Center where she now teaches in their teacher training program. Her practice and teaching style have been deeply influenced by her time spent in India studying at the Tantra-based Bihar School of Yoga and by a number of other master teachers from a wide variety of traditions from all over the world. She has completed her 500-hour YTT and is currently working on completing a training in the Trauma Release Process (TRE). As a student of Baba Hari Dass, she has been encouraged to deepen her own Yoga practice by living and sharing a holistic approach to Yoga. She is inspired by weaving Yoga philosophy into playful asana classes for all levels of practitioners.
